Evaporative Cooler Maintenance: End-of-Season Guide

Do you know how to prepare an industrial evaporative cooler for the end of the season?

When summer comes to an end, an industrial evaporative cooler may have been operating daily for several months, moving large volumes of air and continuously circulating water.

Before storing it until the following season, it is advisable to carry out basic cleaning and inspection. This is not simply about keeping the unit clean: proper end-of-season maintenance helps prevent limescale and dirt build-up, unpleasant odours, reduced performance and certain breakdowns when the equipment is used again.

In this guide, we explain how to prepare a portable evaporative cooler for winter.

Important: These are general recommendations. Always follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer of your equipment.

  1. Check the pump and water distribution before emptying the unit

Before completely emptying the water tank, take the opportunity to check that the water circulation system is working correctly.

Switch on the cooling function and check that:

  • The pump operates correctly.
  • Water reaches all the evaporative cooling pads.
  • The water distributor wets the pads evenly.
  • There are no areas that remain dry.
  • The float or water inlet valve operates correctly.

If part of a cooling pad remains dry while the rest receives water, there may be a blockage caused by dirt or limescale in the distributor.

This is also a good opportunity to identify a pump that is beginning to fail or any component that should be replaced before the next season.

  1. Empty the water tank completely

Once you have checked that the system is working correctly, switch off the unit and disconnect it from the power supply. Turn off the water inlet if the cooler is connected to the mains water supply, and open the drain.

Empty the tank completely and remove any dirt, sediment or limescale deposits that have accumulated during the season.

Pay particular attention to the bottom of the tank, the pump, the water level sensor and the float valve.

If limescale has accumulated, use only cleaning products and procedures compatible with the equipment’s materials and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Some manufacturers specify particular procedures for descaling the water circuit. This is why it is important to consult the maintenance manual for your model.

  1. Clean the evaporative cooling pads

Evaporative cooling pads are one of the most important components of the cooler, as they allow the interaction between water and air that produces evaporative cooling.

Remove them according to the manufacturer’s instructions and eliminate accumulated dust, dirt and deposits.

Use low-pressure water.

Do not apply high-pressure water directly to the evaporative cooling pads, as this can damage their structure and shorten their service life.

Do not use stiff brushes or chemicals that could damage the material.

If you use a pressure washer to clean other resistant parts of the cooler, always protect the cooling pads and electrical and electronic components.

  1. Inspect the condition of the cooling pads

Cleaning also provides an opportunity to assess their condition.

Consider replacing the cooling pads if they show:

  • Significant deformation.
  • Limescale deposits that are difficult to remove.
  • Damaged areas.
  • Persistent unpleasant odours after cleaning.
  • Uneven water distribution.
  • A noticeable reduction in water absorption capacity.

There is no need to wait until the first hot day to discover that the cooling pads need replacing.

  1. Clean and inspect the rest of the evaporative cooler

Take advantage of the end of the season to carry out a general visual inspection.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Water pump.
  • Water level sensor.
  • Float or water inlet valve.
  • Water distributor and pipes.
  • Grilles and louvres.
  • Wheels and brakes.
  • Power cable and plug.
  • Overall condition of the housing.

External dirt can be removed using a cloth, water and a neutral cleaning product compatible with the equipment’s materials.

On industrial equipment, pressurised water may be used on certain durable parts of the unit, but it must never be directed towards evaporative cooling pads, motors, electrical panels, connections or electronic components.

  1. Remove limescale from the pump and water circuit when necessary

Limescale is one of the main problems affecting the water circulation system of an evaporative cooler.

If deposits are present on the pump, they can be removed by following the manufacturer’s instructions. For certain models, white vinegar may be used to help dissolve these deposits.

It is also advisable to inspect the pipes and upper water distributor, as a blockage may prevent part of the cooling pad from receiving sufficient water.

Each manufacturer may specify a different descaling procedure, so we do not recommend using chemical products without first checking their compatibility with the equipment.

  1. Dry the equipment completely

Once cleaning is complete and the water circuit has been checked, allow the equipment to drain completely.

You can then run the unit in ventilation-only mode, without activating the water pump, for approximately 30 minutes or until the cooling pads and interior are completely dry, provided the manufacturer permits this operating mode.

The aim is to avoid storing the evaporative cooler with residual moisture for several months.

  1. Store the unit clean, dry and protected

The evaporative cooler should be stored:

  • In an upright position.
  • With the water tank completely empty.
  • In a dry location.
  • Protected from dust.
  • With the cooling pads completely dry.

If the manufacturer supplies a protective cover, use it.

Keep the remote control and accessories together with the unit to prevent them from being misplaced during winter.

Why carry out maintenance at the end of summer rather than in spring?

Because it allows you to identify maintenance requirements while you still know how the equipment performed at the end of the season.

If you find a damaged pump, cooling pads that need replacing, a faulty float valve or a partially blocked distributor, you can arrange repairs or order spare parts in advance.

Waiting until the first hot day means discovering a fault precisely when you need to use the cooler.

What should you check before using the cooler again?

Before the next cooling season begins:

  1. Visually inspect the evaporative cooling pads.
  2. Check the inside of the water tank.
  3. Connect the water supply or fill the tank.
  4. Check the pump.
  5. Make sure all cooling pads receive water evenly.
  6. Check that the fan operates correctly.
  7. Listen for unusual noises.
  8. Check for water leaks.

Carry out this test before the first heatwave arrives.

Can an evaporative cooler be used during winter?

Yes. There is no specific date when you must stop using an evaporative cooler.

Certain industrial processes, workshops or warehouses may generate significant heat even when outdoor temperatures have dropped.

The equipment can continue to be used for as long as necessary.

The important thing to remember is that an evaporative cooler requires adequate air renewal to operate correctly. It should not be used like a conventional air conditioning system in a completely enclosed space.

Frequently asked questions about evaporative cooler maintenance

Should you empty an evaporative cooler during winter?

If the equipment will remain unused for several months, it is advisable to store it clean, dry and without water remaining in the tank, always following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can I clean evaporative cooling pads with a pressure washer?

Applying high-pressure water directly to cooling pads is not recommended. It can deform or damage their structure. Use low-pressure water and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How can I remove limescale from an evaporative cooler?

This depends on the manufacturer and the materials used in the equipment. Some manufacturers allow white vinegar to be used for specific descaling procedures. Do not use descaling products without first checking their compatibility with your cooler.

When should evaporative cooling pads be replaced?

There is no single replacement interval that applies to all equipment. Cooling pads should be inspected regularly, and replacement should be considered when they become deformed, heavily affected by limescale, damaged or unable to absorb and distribute water correctly.

Why does my evaporative cooler smell bad after winter?

Residual moisture, stagnant water or dirt accumulated during prolonged storage can cause unpleasant odours. Proper cleaning and drying before storing the equipment help prevent these problems.

Why is an evaporative cooling pad not getting completely wet?

A common cause is uneven water distribution due to dirt, limescale or blockages in the distributor. It is also advisable to check the pump and water flow rate.
