What to do when air conditioning isn’t viable in an industrial warehouse

When the heat arrives, many companies first think about installing air conditioning in the warehouse. It’s a logical reaction, but not always the best decision.

In an industrial warehouse there are factors that greatly complicate a traditional installation: high ceilings, open doors, constant inflow of hot air, machinery running, large volume of space, and work zones that differ widely from one another.

Do you need to improve the thermal comfort in an open warehouse?
Or do you need to renew and move accumulated hot air?

1. Professional portable air conditioning: for specific areas

When the problem is localized, it’s not always worth climate-controlling the entire warehouse.

The heat may particularly affect a worker area, a booth, a technical room, an office inside the warehouse, a quality-control point, or a work zone where a more controlled temperature is needed.

Sometimes the problem isn’t just the temperature. It’s that the hot air stays trapped inside.

This happens a lot in warehouses with metal roofs, poor cross-ventilation, machinery generating heat, or spaces where air doesn’t circulate properly.

In these cases, before adding cooling, it may be necessary to improve industrial ventilation.

Ventilation helps move the air, renew the environment, and reduce pockets of accumulated heat.

heat concentrates in high zones;
there’s poor air circulation;
the warehouse builds up heat during the day;

The key: don’t choose equipment before understanding the warehouse

The common mistake is to start with the product:

“I need air conditioning.”
“I need an evaporative cooler.”
“I need fans.”

But the right decision starts with the actual use of the warehouse.

Before recommending a solution, you need to review:

actual working surface area;
warehouse height;
open doors;
hottest zones;
number of people affected;
machinery or processes that generate temperature;
whether the problem is localized, general, or one of ventilation;
whether a fixed, portable, or combined solution is needed.

From there, you decide.

An evaporative cooler may make more sense to improve comfort in an open warehouse.
